I have been drawn to hand drumming for the past 15 years, but I have not had the opportunity to get into it until recently. I started jamming with friends a couple years ago, mainly on the djembe and doumbek. I started to feel comfortable messing around on those drums and I would even say that at times we sound pretty good. A little over a month ago, I started taking drum lessons on the conga from Dave Noland with a couple of other guys. I have never felt as comfortable on the conga as I have on the other types of hand drums. But little by little we have been picking up the proper techniques and learning some traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms. I feel like I am getting better and I want to keep getting better. I practice the rhythms almost daily and I have just started to mess around on the conga for fun. I think that the more I handle the conga, the more natural the sounds, rhythms and tecniques will come to me later. All of us in the class are improving each week and I can only imagine how good we will sound in a couple more months. I feel lucky to have this opportunity to learn hand drumming properly here in Lake County.
